Microwave water..
I remember seeing this quite some time ago, but since it made its way back to me, I shall share it with all of you.
Microwaving Water!
A 26-year old man decided to have a cup of coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that the! water was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup "blew up" into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.
He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc., (nothing metal).
It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a tea kettle.
General Electric's Response:
Thanks for contacting us, I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach the boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.
To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds! before moving it or adding anything into it.
Here is what our local science teacher had to say on the matter: "Thanks for the microwave warning. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur anytime water is heated and will particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new, or when heating a small amount of water (less than half a cup).
What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapor bubbles can form. If the cup is very new then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point.
What then usually happens is that the liquid is bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beverage spews when opened after having been shaken." 28 April 2008 @ 12:48:01 hrs

My birthday events..
| 1. Greg took me out to dinner @ Hog's Breath for my birthday this year. But I was so hungry, i forgot to take a pix of the food before we started eating! HAHAHH! |
| my beef steak |
his chicken something |
 |
 |
|
the food was quite nice. Serving a tad big.. but maybe cos greg gave me all his corn n brocolli.. but the things they showed on the tv while we were there.. TURN OFF LA! there were showing these motorcross racers, with those ang mo girls with huge boobs and thighs parading in their tiniest bikinis.. in slow mo! urgh.
|
and a pix of our wonderful selves. ;)
|
2. from da bro..
lol.. he sez i always wear jeans and boring clothes. so he bought me this book.. in hope that i will become a fashionista!
*whisper* and it is true, i have no idea what are half of the items and people the book is referring to!
but i have completed the book and moral of the story is.. a stylish and chic woman is one that exudes confidence and is comfortable in her clothes, it need not be branded or of the latest fashion trend. Classic and elegance is the look to go for.
;p
|
3. was a treat from kellin.. lunch @ .. shit i suddenly can't the place name.. where we had fish n chips..
4. was dinner from Darryl.. he initially planned to take me to CHIJMES HOg's Breath! and i was just there the day before.. lol...
and i wasn't very hungry cos of the site inspection earlier in the day @ Scarlett, and the other places he planned were heavy on the tummy!
so i smashed all his plans and backup plans.. lol, sorry kor!
so after walking around for a bit, we settled for Tony Roma's.. where i had grilled prawns.. YUM!
|
5. a bag from eugene n law |
 |
|
we initially wanted to go Crab Shack.. cos the food reviews were like cheap n good.. and i always go pass the huge sign near greg's parents place.
when eugene n i got there.. it turned out that Crab Shack NO MORE! its now a kopishop masquerading as Crab Shack.. -.- $#%(@(&%!)@*#$
|
 |
| so we headed over to Thomson Plaza and had Sushi Teh instead... Jap Steamboat! |
 |
| the usual suspects.. |
 |
they said my this pix look like the mocca ad, the one where the crazy girl was looking for a white malteser.. -.- |
 |
6. dinner @ Rendezvous with leafie, lindy and kellin
was sup to be @ Hog's Breath.. but changed to PS.. then changed to Rendezvous.. lol.. and there was a miscomm between lindy and leafie which was kinda funny.. hahah..
food selection was ok, i was more hooked on the cold stuff.. like sashimi, prawns, cold noodles, mussels, sushi.. and i ate my fish raw oyster from the shell.. verdict.. 'EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, slimy on the outside, crunchy on the inside, eeeeeewwwwwwww' mussels better.
the cooked food.. i din touch @ all!
and yesterday din have roast beef.. they had roast lamb instead.. apparently leafie like lamb.. lol.. but got smell.. me dun like.
and they had chocolate mousse!! yum!
thanks guys for hanging around even though you had somewhere else to be.
Thanks everyone who made the effort to meet up! ;)

Doomsday
reviewed by gin
| Doomsday is about a virus that broke out in Scotland. In order to contain the virus, Britain built a wall surrounding Scotland, and declared it a no-fly zone, no one gets in, no one gets out. Slowly, the people that were quarantined within the walls ran out of food and all social order ran loose, finally they started eating each other.
some 30 years later, this same virus appeared in Britain, outside of the walls. It appears that survivors had been spotted within the walls, the govt sent a team in to try and get a cure for the virus. and so the story goes..

www.blackle.com
lindy sent the following..
Google is the second Brain to many of us. We use it frequently. It uses
white screen which consumes high power.
Read the following.........
If Google had a black screen, taking in
account the huge number of page views, according to calculations, 750 mega
watts/hour per year would be
saved..!!!!!!
In response , Google created a black version of its search engine, called
Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but obviously
with lower energy consumption:

anyway.. quite an entertaining show. Has it's comedic moments, as with all Jackie Chan films, and as everyone sez, its worth watching just for the fight scene between Jackie Chan and Jet Li!
and Sparrow is pretty la!
tot the White-Haired Witch was quite pretty too, had some attitude thingy going there.

Three Kingdoms
reviewed by gin
well.. to tell you the truth.. i'm not well versed in the Three Kingdoms.. i only know a few characters from playing Dynasty Warriors couple of years ago, and even then it was just use the characters to hack and slash hahah!
so, this Zhao Zi Long guy.. totally no clue who he is. hahaha!
and i hear Cao Ying was sup to be a guy.. but in the show its a girl.. Maggie Q.
I tot the Cao's troops would have a better advantage when they met in battle, cos they had drums and the pipa .. + 2 to morale boost.
and they had upgraded horses.. (the horses had red saddles) lol
and the main characters.. Zhang Fei, Liu Bei etc.. all must show their weapons first before we can identify who their characters are.. totally cannot tell la! and in the game, liu bei had those long feelers.. in the how.. liu bei was like.. weak little leader.. according to the expert, liu bei never had feelers b4... he was never a leader... oni a great warrior, apparently i confused liu bei with lu bu! tsk.. oh and zhu ge liang.. ha. first scene was of him eating.. LIKE A ZHU! hahah! tt's funny.. ok. nvm.
anyhoo.. it was an OK show for me. Some fight scenes reminded me of LOTR's battle @ Gondor, with the Rohan horses running over the orcs and what not.. 20 April 2008 @ 14:15:14 hrs

well.. i don't exactly know what to say about this movie. its very random.
about 3 blood brothers, on a journey to self discovery.. or bonding.. thought up by the eldest brother, Owen Wilson, his original intention was to go find their mother who did not attend their father's funeral a year ago. Their mum became a nun in some part of india by the way.
along the way, they go to different places in India, buy poisonous snakes, do spiritaul stuff, get thrown off the train etc.
its an ok show.. but i din really understood the ending though. hiakz. feels like there's a hidden meaning somewhere.. out there.. lol 16 April 2008 @ 12:29:55 hrs

weird...
so like.. saw a weird girl @ the mrt stn today.. she was probably upper sec or poly i think..
she was wearing a white n black striped blouse, black kneelength shorts, the overall look reminds me of that Emily Strange.
that's not the weird part.
the weird part was.. she was cradling a little black haired doll in the crook of her arm and she was caressing the doll's hair!
ON THE PLATFORM of woodlands mrt station with the morning crowd, the pple around her were looking @ her la! but she seemed oblivious.
too bad my camera wasn't already in my hands.. if not i confirm ge siao snap her pix.
which reminds me of this WOMAN that i saw on the train yesterday, you know little girls like to wear those fluffy pink baby doll dresses? look like princess dress, with the gauze lining outside a silky inner layer? yes? well, this WOMAN, yesh, i repeat, woman, a working adult, with long black hair, was wearing a full baby pink dress that looked exactly like that la! in the midst of all the black, grey and whites of the working crowd in the train, suddenly see a full baby pink gauzy dress, i got a shock when i saw her. lunch..
went over to China Square Central for lunch with Kellin cos i was craving for potato.. baked potato with cheese.. oh yea..
who knows.. walked all the way there, all the cafes all sky high price la. *grumble* and kellin sez o'briens smelled like rojak. ha.
ANYWAY, so nvm, we tot go eat jap @ Kyo-Nichi Japanese Ramen.. long time nvr go liao.. last time always go there eat with eugene n law.. the place was quite empty when we were there, gave us a table beside 2 guys, who had already placed there orders. We decided what we wanted to eat, and the people started streaming in, then the guys' food arrived.. we spent quite a long time trying to get someone's attention to place our order. finally got the attention of one of the waiters, he said 'okok' and never came back. 4 other tables were waiting to place orders too.
At long last, this auntie waitress decided she will see me wave my hand, (the guys were almost done with their ramen btw), but she asked another waitress to come take our order. That waitress shook her head, so this auntie no choice, started to walk towards us, when she was accosted by another customer who said, 'we've been waiting very long over that side for someone to take our order'. and the auntie just followed her away without even saying anything to us la!
pissed off, kellin n i left and went next door to don's pie where the smell of the crab beehoon was.. OOH LA LA! but we had chicken pie instead. kekeke.. the crab beehoon is $15.90 nett. EVERYONE around us was eating crab beehoon la.. see them sucking @ the claws, breaking the shell open with the shell-breaking-tong-looking device.. OMG! *drool 10 April 2008 @ 14:09:29 hrs

Train service disruption today..
between Yew Tee and Bukit Gombak.. or was it Bukit Batok... i dunno.. can't rem.
i only know we were evicted from the train @ Yew Tee roughly about 8-8.10am...
Announcement was got incident @ Chua Chu Kang, train between Yew Tee and Jurong will be disrupted. Advised to take the Southbound train towards Marina.
So everyone waited for the southbound train which never came. While the northbound train kept emptying passengers @ the station then driving off the way it came EMPTY. I waited for like half hour la, before they finally decided to turn the northbound train into the southbound train.. -.- took the southbound train @ 8.35.
then the announcement they made @ the station asking pple going towards marina to take the train on the other platform, only half the pple moved la. Apparently the other half either not listening to announcement, dun understand english, or just deaf.
the station ctrl pple had to go clap hands and yell 'HELLO! those going towards woodlands and marina, please take the train on the other platform!' Only then did the pple move. Sheesh.
when the train pulled into woodlands mrt, i felt like alighting and going home can! take leave. or work from home!
anyway, i reach office about 9.30-9.40..
apparently, someone jumped @ cck.
