Pirates 4 on Stranger Tides
reviewed by greg
The 4th iteration of the swash buckling adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean. Without the extra characters of Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley, how will Captain Jack Sparrow fare on his own?
Story
So the previous ended off with the Black Pearl being sailed off by Barbossa, and Jack Sparrow setting off to get it back. Jack appears in London at the start to save his first mate from execution, and learns of himself collecting sailors for expedition to the fountain of youth, even though he wasn't! So he stays to find out the imposter, in comes the imposter, Penelope Cruz, a past lover of his, and as fights turn out, Jack gets kidnapped for the journey. And as exciting as journeys should be, there are zombies, legendary pirate Black Beard, mermaids and of course, Barbossa back as an English Captain. Without telling too much of the story, all of them set off for the fountain of youth, there is a ritual to carry out, and all are rushing there to be the first.
Conclusion
The journey was short, not too much action scenes as there are comical moments. Jack Sparrow still plays off Barbossa the best, the banter simply comical as rivals/friends. If you really like the past 3 shows, this show could be a let down for you. It just doesn't play as well as the first 3, with the pacing starting out great and getting draggy in the middle. Only worth watching part is how the idea of beautiful mermaids like Disney's The Little Mermaid is torn to sheds with this incarnation. Don't bring your kids to watch! 21 May 2011 @ 21:10:05 hrs

Fast and Furious 5
reviewed by greg
Fast cars, hot chicks, hip hop music and lots of unrealistic action scenes, the ultimate guys movie. There is a reason why this show is up to its 5th iteration.
Story
It starts off with Vin Diesel convicted, and as he is transported, Paul Walker and sister drives up behind with their variant sports cars. Obviously it ain't a send off, as they break him out and run to Rio. In Rio, danger lurks everywhere, whether you are a fugitive or just any plain guy. As a job comes up and Paul Walker takes it up for the cash, they find themselves double crossed as they find out they were heading to their coffins after the job. They mess it up, and realize is by the one man who controls the city, underworld or police. They are threatened, and obviously they don't like it. They round up all the stars from the previous iteration, and do an Ocean 11...
Wait a minute! This ain't no Ocean 11 spin off! This is Fast and Furious, where racing should be its prime theme! Getting further away from its roots, the US send they elite squad in the form of Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) to nab them. Gun firing everywhere, lots of planning of the heist and little bit of car racing.
Conclusion
As a heist movie, its pretty good, pretty ridiculous, but good. But it just strays from what made it such a hit, no funky cars, cars used were mostly black Dodges and Volkswagons. No racing except for a small part with 4 drivers racing police cars? I left the cinema feeling a tad cheated, as though I watched the wrong show. Nice, but just not right. 20 May 2011 @ 14:09:03 hrs

commotion @ 3 in the morning..
so like this morning.. @ 3am.. instead of being woken by dylan for his night feed, i was woken up by a man shouting @ the top of his voice, 'I AM LEE KUAN YAO' x 10000000000 times. like wtf?!
i got up and went to the window to look, cant see where the voice was coming from.
then i heard another guy's voice 'are you afraid to die?'
the yelling guy shouted 'i am not afraid to die! i am lee hsien long!'
win already.
i went around the house looking for the neighbourhood police post number.. cannot find.. i glanced out the window again and saw a police jeep pull up @ the opposite block, then the fire department's jeep and an ambulance. the latter 2 halted at my block. both drivers were looking up my block. greg concluded.. the guy must be going to jump.
so i went round to the dining area window to try n see if i can spot anything.. nothing..
then i went back to the bedroom window and saw 2 guys in the opposite block void deck looking over. 1 guy was on the phone.
then another police car, 2 civil defence motor bike and a full blown fire engine appeared.
i peeked from the toilet window, the dining window, the study window, the master window.. cannot see where the guy was.
then shortly, saw 3 policemen walking a half naked guy to the police car. the guy resisted when the police pushed him into the police car. 2 ladies followed behind them. the whole army of flashing lights left the scene. silently they came, just as soundlessly they left.
boring. dunno head, dunno tail. go back to sleep. lol
doesn't involve body in the water tank can already. 18 May 2011 @ 09:18:58 hrs

was scrolling through the images in my phone yesterday.. when i came across this. forgot i snapped them with my phone!
so dylan was down with cough & fever & runny nose for the past weeks, he actually got better last weekend, hardly any cough, no more fever.. then suddenly monday he started coughing all over again.. *sigh*
@ least no fever
we thinks his top 2 teeth are going to erupt soon.. his fingers keep going up to touch the upper gum area.
and despite his cough, pil say he still talk & talk & talk & talk.. and play with his older cousins.. laugh and laugh..
guess that's good! at least he's not grumpy sick, he's happy sick! :)
baby get well soon!! 13 May 2011 @ 09:02:01 hrs

The Lost Bladesman
reviewed by greg
The caucasians have their super heroes, but in Asian context, the Romance of the Three Kingdom characters are as good as it gets. Here the story revolves around Guan Yu, some put him on an altar as the God of War.
He starts off as a captive of Cao Cao, the prime minister of China then, and obvious big baddie in most stories about the three kingdoms. But here you see a more humane Cao Cao, one who speaks well as most would relate as, and also one who thinks of his people. In order to unite China, he has to conquer all lands. Obviously when you have an excellent general/fighter as a captive, you will want him on your side. It all starts off with "You can stop this way if you go out and kill this general, saving many lives in the process", there goes Guan Yu. The lamb in the wolf skin.
Cao Cao and Guan Yu has a short alliance, but Guan Yu remains loyal to his own king, Liu Bei. The agreement is should Liu Bei call him, he will leave. Cao Cao makes a good point in, if Guan Yu wants to leave, who can stop him?
So to Guan Yu's surprise, on his journey back to Liu Bei, he has hunted by men from Cao Cao's camp, sensing a betrayal of sorts. That is when you will see Donnie Yen at his best, killing all in sight.
Conclusion
There is a small twist at the end, and the emotions of both main man are commendable, but sadly, the ending fight sequence leaves much to be desired. You would expect a fighting show to end with a bang, doesn't matter how emotional or how good the acting is, this ending just whimpers out, overall still worth watching, but not one of his better shows. 12 May 2011 @ 09:26:21 hrs

Thor
reviewed by gin
Thor, is the God of Thunder, cast down to Earth by his father, Odin, for reigniting an old fued with the Frost Giants because of Thor's arrogance.
Here on Earth, he befriends Jane Foster, and learns humility and what it means to put others before self when Earth is invaded by some big armor guy from Asgard.
The usual appearances by Stan Lee, Nick Fury. Special appearance by Hawkeye.
SHIELD played a bigger role here, and a few references to Iron Man and The Avengers.
Stay for the usual post credit show clip.
I didn't find it very 'WA!' considering the very enthusiastic 'Must watch Thor !' tagpost by Berry. It probaby raised my expectations of the show.. so.. 'so-so'. A must watch, just cause its a Marvel Superhero movie and Chris Hemsworth is DAMN DROOLWORTHY LA! omg! his bod.. *weeeoooeeee! 03 May 2011 @ 11:13:33 hrs
