The last decent airplane game i played was… Red Baron, or something 1990s. Since that one, there hasn’t been a real ‘blockbuster’ flying game.

HAWX is from Tom Clancy and Ubisoft, the guys that did the Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell series. So the standard’s quite high. After the 1st play through, I must say, even though it’s all virtual, the feeling of flying through the air, doing all sorts of silly stunts in a F22 Raptor that costs $138 million in real life, is very entertaining indeed.

The story’s surprisingly good, as expected of Tom Clancy games. There’s a sense of urgency in every mission, and it makes you want to carry on to the next just to see how it unfolds. There are over 50 planes in the game, I’ve only unlocked about 35 or so. There’s a level up system, sort of like Call of Duty. Allows you to unlock better planes and weapon configurations.

The thing i like most is the control system. Most flight games get frustrating during aerial dogfights. Can hardly see the enemy while you keep doing loops. HAWX uses this OFF system where you can see the action in a far away 3rd person trailing camera, and the ridiculous physics allow you to do crazy stalling and drifting maneuvers that would assume if attempted in real life would kill the pilot xD. The whole system makes shooting down enemies quite satisfying as you can pull drifts, dodge multiple missiles and fire your own missiles, all at the same time.

Haven’t tried multilayer yet, should be even more hectic with other human players xD
