I’ve been on a SCANDAL rampage the past couple of days, saving everything I can find on them. Seems my live band obsession is back. I realize I’m quite the live concert fan, especially if it involves glow sticks, Japan, and lots of jumping. xD
I got intro-ed to SCANDAL through this video from Wilson, some months ago during the K-ON! craze. Died down after a while. But my fandom recently grew to new heights after I found out how they started out.
Unlike most ‘target manufactured’ pop groups, SCANDAL actually started out performing street lives every weekend at Shiroten in Osaka Castle Park. Eventually over one hundred fans began to consistently attend their live performances, causing the band to become more noticed in the eyes of the Japanese public.
It was in August 2007, that they got their big break performing at a highly recognized and respected club in Shibuya, Shibuya Club Asia. Kitty Records approached the four girls if they would like to have their music recorded with them. Several months later, the girls had worked out a flexible independent agreement with Kitty in partnership with Tower Records. That was how their indie career started.
In 2008, 3 singles later, they literally outgrew their record label, selling more singles than their label could produced. Finally in September 2008, they moved over to Sony Music Japan who signed them on to their Epic Records label. From then on things got better and better, both in terms of marketing and video production values.
From their humble indie roots, the girls have come quite a long way to where they are now. In this music industry saturated with ’sexy’ groups, it’s quite hard discover really talented groups like SCANDAL. They don’t exactly have the best vocals, but they’re still young in their careers, and are a blast to watch live.
My next Japan trip is going to have SCANDAL concerts in the itinerary. ;]
