Been getting some flak from clients, even old ones, on why I’m refusing to take their projects. It’s not that I refuse to take your project, it’s just that I value my free time much more now, compared to a year ago. Not only that, I’ve learn not to take boring brand projects, like random e-commerce ones, government type educational ones. Those just scream boring! for me.
Also projects that are approved by committees are to be avoided like a plague. I feel after you’ve taken one too many projects, one should start to be selective on the type of projects you take on, so it looks like a good fit in your portfolio. If you want to be known as a do it all across every industry, then good for you.
I like to specialize in smaller business owners or groups, where relationships are closer, where your work doesn’t have to be approved by 13 departments, where your invoice doesn’t have to go through a mystical ‘finance department’ that never received your invoice in the first place.
There was this recent client, that refused to reveal anything about his ‘interesting project’ until I met him to discuss further. So I did, and found out it was some new shampoo brand from Taiwan they were importing. Introducing new brands can be very fun, but he wanted to do a e-commerce shopping site, like an online mini mart for housewives, just for the shampoo. Omg no, sorry.
I asked him if he had any other designers for backup, he said he had a couple, but he chose me because someone told him I was an expert at last minute projects. I shit you not, that was exactly what he said. My god I’m actually known for last minute stuff now. That’s actually very sad.
“..but he chose me because someone told him I was an expert at last minute projects.”
DUDE, TIME TO RE-MARKET YOURSELF. uncaps
I didn’t even market myself like that in the first place! :(

EH!! Last min guy?? this is no good man… you gotta relook at how you gonna do your projects in future.. u must have accept too many last min jobs and is able to deliver them on time.. hence his impression on you!
Yes that’s the case. 70% of all the projects i take are rushed things. Time to draw line :p
