Simply epic. Definitely one of the top 3 feature films for 2009! The only other movie that got me saying epic was Australia. I mean that film was literally epic.
From a technical point of view, Avatar’s in a league of it’s own. One of the best films ever that effectively used the power of visual effects to breath life into a story. Did you know they had to wait for technology to catch up before they could make the movie? The first Transformers movie in my opinion was another piece that did everything right, merging 3D characters with live actors.
There is no longer a distinguishable line between what’s real and what’s not in visual effects. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The surroundings, creatures, movements, facial muscles, expressions, were all, unbelievably real.
The classic ‘reluctant guy turned hero save the princess and the world’ kind of plot takes the backseat for me. I mean it’s OK, nothing much to say about the story, quite predictable. Honestly I was too busy being awed by the amazing visuals to bother much about the story.
They pushed the bar so high, it’s exciting to see what kind of movies will follow in the coming years. Must watch.
