Oh my goodness! This was like the only decent usable photo from my little experiment at this year’s Cosfest. But I must say though, that every year the standard of local cosplayers increase by leaps and bounds. Now they’re coming with LED embedded stuff! Like, uwah! Epic.
Ok back to our little experiment. Last year during AFA we got owned by swarms of photographers. This year we got owned again. I was trying to mount the umbrella setup on a monopod so we could walk around with a super portable studio setup ‘thing’. But it didn’t work very well.
1. I brought the wrong lens. Out of sheer stupidity I decided to bring only the fixed 50mm, knowing full well i should have brought the 24-105mm since it’s going to be a tight squeeze in the hall. But nooo I was lazy and didn’t want to carry the extra weight lol. This resulted in us needing way too much room just to get a full body shot. And everyone kept walking in our line of sight ._.
2. The backgrounds were too messy! Even with the lighting we couldn’t separate the subject from the random crowds walking around behind them. There were people everywhere!
3. We attracted major attention. Every time I engaged one of the cos players, opened my umbrella and raised it above, surrounding photographers will start to surround us and snap away, often blocking our shot in the process. Chad found this practice particularly rude, but I knew it was going to happen since, well, it was like that at AFA. xD
4. Lighting fail!!! I only realized later at home, that I shouldn’t have held the light so high, but more in front of their face and chest. Act smart no reflector want to use top down lighting ._.
5. The monopod bent under all that weight. Can you imagine that? The monopod bent! Apparently it’s not meant to be used as a boom stand. And now I can’t slide the damn thing smoothly now. ARGH!
Never mind! At least now I know what doesn’t work. Oh by the way there were a few other portable studio like setups outside the hall doing shoots for the cos players. Awesome no? Uwah everyone’s getting high end now. Both cos players and photographers!
damn rude la singaporean “photography” uncles
they should spend less time on club snap and more time learning manners
