MONTHS of shooting food, thinking why the hell it doesn’t quite look correct. Played with the lights, played with the angles, played with color correction, but none of it really made it look like those in the magazines.
Just today we had another long shoot, 25 dishes in a row, over 4 hours. As soon as the first dish came out, I hit the same ‘the shot still doesn’t look right!’ problem. I thought, argh f*** it, the 100mm I was using all the way just wasn’t working. Screwed in the new 50mm F1.4 I bought last week and… DAMN EVERYTHING LOOKS RIGHT!
Not just the color and contrast, the simple fact that it’s at 50mm, the same perspective as the human eye made the food ‘pop’ more. The 100mm was flattening the photos too much. AHHHHHH!!!! It allowed me to get closer, higher, and the lens was so light, it wasn’t as tiring as the other lenses I was using. So much fun!
2 issues though. It tends to back-focus a bit, meaning I have to pull back a few mm after locking the focus to get it right. And the minimum focus distance isn’t that great. I can’t go in as close to fill the frame. I might just try the 50mm F2.8 MACRO version. wooo.
