Yay! completed our first ever food shoot!
It’s actually not the first, my first was Nan Hwa Chang, then Hotel R, then this random one here. I say today’s the first because we went all out, shooting tethered with Wilson’s fancy MacBook xD.
Overall i thought it went OK. Relied a lot on the chef’s help for art direction and angles. Little things like one side of the food being cut cleaner than the other, only the chefs can pick out. I haven done enough food stuff to notice such tiny details.
If not for the live preview on the MacBook, I think the shoot would have gone a lot worst. Lol. I mean, like having the client squint at the tiny camera LCD after each shot isn’t going to be very productive.
Other things I learnt, always shoot things that will melt first! Like ice-cream and other foamy looking desserts. Another disaster we narrowly avoided was using daylight from a huge window as the primary light. At 2pm it was perfect. By the time got to the 6th dish it was 4pm and the light gradually faded till our fill light was overpowering the main one. Phew.
We did some simple portraits of the chef later on. Glad those went quite well. The interior shots I felt wasn’t up to par. I still got a long ways to go in that area. Super tiring day. Many thanks to Wilson for being my second set of eyes. If not confirm dies.
