Laidback much?

Laidback much?

I was sitting in on a meeting this morning, observing as I waited for my turn while other departments settled their issues. The thing that got to me the most while waiting was how slow and why irrelevant issues were being mentioned. From a “time as a resource” point of view, here I was, waiting for a good half hour, doing nothing but still getting paid by the hour as other departments leisurely presented their stuff, speaking so slow it’s as though we’re having Sunday coffee and no one has anything to do.

Then I realize even in a single company, different departments have different cultures because of the way their managers run the place. Lazy managers will create lazy employees, while fast paced, on the ball managers will create efficient employees. It’s most true that employees will take after their boss in terms of performance and behavior.

So I guess it’s a good thing when going for interviews, to see what kind of company or team culture they have. Coming into my current company from my own agency 2 year back, I got a surprise at the more laidback culture here. And I’ve also heard about the even more laid back culture of the people in Phuket.

By ‘laidback’ I mean mainly no sense of urgency. And if you’re working in a team that is rather laid back, remember not to fall into the same laidback mode and be too comfortable. You’ll have a hard time climbing out and getting back to a faster pace.
